Oil or rainforest - could it be a clear-cut choice? In Ecuador, limited oil exploitation has been been taking place in parts of Yasuni National Park in the Amazon (which covers nearly 10,000 sq km) since the 1970s. But last year President Rafael Correa abandoned a conservation plan that would have seen rich nations pay Ecuador NOT to drill in previously untouched parts of the park. Activists say that theyve now collected enough signatures to have a referendum on whether the Yasuni area should be opened further to oil exploration.
