Ok, Evan. You and your theorist/composer friends may make fun of me, especially since Im a musician. But, in no particular order, 10 pieces of music that have stuck with me: 1) La Boheme, Puccini. The perfect opera. Comedy, tragedy, nostalgia, poetry, unity within and across acts. And, no small feat: BREVITY. And particularly O soave fanciulla, the duet at the end of Act , contains 6 of the most sublime minutes in opera. 2) Le Nozze di Figaro, Mozart. The most perfect opera of its kind. And again, the duet Sullaria is sublime. Some may hate it for being simple, but in the hands of capable performers its really special. 3) Finale of Siegfried (Love duet), Wagner. 4) Tristan und Isolde, Act 2. Wagner. 5) The Tomb Scene from Aida. Verdi. 6) The presentation of the rose from Der Rosenkavalier. Strauss. 7) Mahler 6th Symphony. 8) Dichterliebe, Schumann. 9) Verdi Requiem. Specifically, the Dies Irae. And more specifically, the trumpet fanfare in the Dies Irae (https://youtube/watch?v=TVjDP0vlem4, fanfare begins about 2:20. UGH.) Hostias quartet is almost as awesome. 10) And finally, what I think is the perfect English art song: Silent Noon by Ralph Vaughn Williams. Dont judge me.
