Ok, I am looking for valid suggestions to deal with this - TopicsExpress

Ok, I am looking for valid suggestions to deal with this situation, which doesnt involve us spending any money or entering into a contract. My next door neighborhood is selling their home. They have a leak in their basement. They got an appraisal and the contractor stated that this is supposedly a leak due to the incorrect installation of siding on our house by the previous owner. My neighbor would like us to split the cost to fix it, and also call the contractor and make the arrangements to fix it. First reaction, Im not paying for anything so they can make a better profit on selling the home, and I dont want to enter into a contract with a representative of a company that Ive never met. They have already let us know that he made no guarantee that this would fix the problem. In addition, apparently their agent will not put their home on the market until we fix the leak. Also, I like these people, and we have been nothing but cordial over the last 8 years weve lived here. My first reaction? I dont give a shit. If I was in their place, I would chalk it up to money I have invest to have my home in the best condition. I see it like they could have just asked us to pay to replace the siding on their home or re-paint. So my question is, if you agree with me that its their problem, it would be helpful if I could find a respectful way to tell them they need to fix it themselves. If you think its our problem and then if we call the contractor, how do I get any assurance that they wont pass along to the new owners that we paid to fix it the first time around, in case there is any problem in the future?
