Ok…Ive never posted any recordings of myself singing, so here goes….! (Please be kind:) Adon Olam. This is my own niggun (melody) set to the powerful words of the 11th century hebrew poet Soloman Ibn Gabirol ZL. He is my God. My living redeemer. Rock of my pain when I am distressed. He is my banner…my refuge, and my portion when I call on Him. Into His hand I place my spirit, when I sleep, and I shall awaken! HaShem is with me….I shall not fear. I felt compelled to create my own niggun to reflect how his life, and these words have given me strength over the last almost two years. I had recited these words for years whenever dovening shacharit and was always a little put off by the minhag of some reform congregations to depart from the more traditional melodies, and with apparent complete disregard for what they said mash up these words to as many different melodies as possible, including but unfortunately not limited to Yellow Submarine…oi vay. After being so moved by his words, I began to do some research on his very short and tragic life in 11th century Spain, and after learning about the emotional pain he had endured from the death of all his family, and after learning about his own tragic death I decided to create this niggun. I reflected on 11th century islamic Spain, one of the few brief periods where Muslims and Jews lived in peace. I borrowed part of a islamic melody I heard a recording of performed on doudouk, and mashed it up to some Spanish sounding chords, and there it was. Now, please keep in mind I do not claim to be a Lead vocalist at all. I have sung and recorded backround parts only. Also, I am a very amateur guitarist, my primary instrument of course being trumpet. Anyway, I hope you get something from this. It has sure given me strength this last couple years. Thanks for listening! שלים Mike Bogart, AKA Michael Ben Baruch
