Ok Les is in Irvin, TX. I just made brauts & tots for John & Maureen, now my federal employee story. About 3 weeks after Les & I were married we drove to the Soc. Sec. Office in Sheridan (the closest one to Gillette) to get her name changed on her ss card. This has to happen before driver’s license bank accounts or any other legal name issue can be addressed. Yes our federal ID cards are paramount. We arrived at 2:55 pm unaware that they close at 3:00 pm. We politely asked the armed guard, who was at least 20 years older than I am (and I am OLD), if we could come in. He in turn asked the 6’-3” 240# burr head behind the counter who looked at the clock and said of course, we don’t close till 3:00. We stated our business and provided our marriage license, Leslee’s current driver’s license in her previous married name, her ss card, her previous marriage license and her divorce decree. The gentleman behind the counter looked over our documents for 60 seconds give or take and said I can’t help you. Now I know this is getting long but I must digress. When Les & I applied for our marriage license in Meeker they told us we could have the license in Leslee’s maiden name of Rowley. We still had to fill out the application with her married name (and her maiden name). The gentleman at the Soc. Sec. Office (and I do use this term very loosely) told us “this document states that Leslee Rowley married Rod Richardson. You are asking for a name change from Leslee Ransone to Leslee Richardson.” He told us we had 2 options. Provide a document that stated that Leslee Ransone had married Rod Richardson or provide a court order that stated Leslee Ransone had changed her legal name to Leslee Richardson. No other options. Now remember we had Leslee’s original marriage license with her maiden name and divorce decree. When we explained that there was no document that stated Leslee Ransone had married Rod Richardson he simply said I guess I need a court order. We left understanding completely why they might see the need for an armed guard, though no disrespect to the elderly gentleman with the gun, security was irrelevant just more government waste. Now the rest of the story, 2 weeks later on our way to the family reunion in Kalispell we stopped at the Soc. Sec. Office in Butte. Granted it was 10:30 in the morning not 5 minutes till closing. We stated our desires to the extremely near sighted gentleman (and I use this term with upmost sincerity) behind the counter. They still had the 30K a year armed guard (he was still 20 years older than I am) in Butte. We presented all of our original documents with the highlighted addition of an emailed copy of our marriage license application from the court house in Meeker. He immediately told us our copy of the application was useless because it was an emailed document and not an original. But then he did his job. He took Leslee’s federal ID card i.e. Soc. Sec. Card made a few taps on his keyboard and said “Oh yes Leslee Rowley born Lander, Wyoming 196? Changed to Leslee Ransone 1993 and now married to Rod Richardson. No problem. 5 minutes later we left with an official letter stating Leslee’s name change and a new card in the mail. Now my point, the guy in Butte was very happy to have his job. I think he enjoyed it. He was very good at it and deserves what ever compensation he receives maybe more. The guy in Sheridan did not like his job (maybe he wanted to be in the secrete service, border patrol, ATF, FBI, CIA, I’m positive he wanted a badge and a gun) hell he would have probably taken the security guards spot if only it paid as well. At any rate he was terrible at his job and completely secure in it. I have in my business, a non union non government entity, fired several subcontractors for incompetence on any number of levels. It would take an act of congress (and God knows they can’t act) to fire this bozo in Sheridan and that is one of hundreds of glaring issues with our federal government. NO ACCOUNTABILITY!!!! At any level and growing like the BLOB!
