Ok. Rant incoming. I just watched the Foo Fighters live at the Cubby Bear in Chicago... still a bit bummed that I wasnt there, but I digress. The show totally blew me away, especially given how long theyve been making music and STILL KICKING SO MUCH ASS. BUT. The whole reason I started writing this was because I had a moment as an active listener and as an artist. Everlong. One of their most famous tunes by far. Last song of the night. You can tell that everyone in the band was totally lost in this song and lost in performing it. There was a connection to the music that I havent heard replicated live in a long long time. And because they were in that moment, I was totally lost in that moment. Then, about halfway through the song, there was a blue note somewhere in the 3 guitars that were playing. In the grand scheme of the whole song, it was a minor thing that in no way diminished my enjoyment of the song or the concert as a whole, but it struck me in a way that snapped me out of my little Foo-induced trance. I still listened, and I still really enjoyed it, but at the same time, the appreciation was a little more cerebral and less on the level of down-to-the-bones flow. And it really got me thinking about something. As a performer, Ive been on the other side of this coin too where my attachment to the song overtook my conscious capacity to think about the chords and lyrics and so on. That moment is something that I get to experience in front of an audience, and I sure as hell hope that someone out there is having a moment just like that in their seat. But Ive also been the guy that misses a string that misses a key note that signals a chord change. Ive been the guy that accidentally forms that C chord on the 4th fret and not the 3rd (it aint pretty). Its refreshing to know that there are successful, popular musicians in the limelight that get so lost in their own music, even after all this time... even to the point of fudging the song just a little bit. Real, honest to goodness music will never die. Ive only ever been this inspired one other time in my life. Just once. Likely never again to that extent or with that much consequence. But this is a pretty close second. Get ready, world. Ive got a few stories to share.
