Ok, This is going to SHOCK some folks, because I am generally very reserved with my tongue, but Ive been biting my tongue for years about this topic. If youre like me, I have several gifts God has blessed me with. I can sing for my supper, and I can legally drive/ride/operate anything from an 18 wheeler down to a unicycle. I am also a gifted and educated automobile technician, Certified by ASE. So dont get mad at me if I or a mechanic shop charges you just to tell you what is wrong with your car. Thats right. Its called a DIAGNOSTIC fee. We mechanics went to school & spent thousands of dollars educating ourselves on the complexities of the modern-day automobile. We are doctors of the automobile. Even a doctor cant fix or diagnose his own car. He/she has to bring it to us. Do you expect us to diagnose your car for free? Does a Doctor diagnose your health condition for free? Yes, we will charge you for a diagnostic fee; we will charge you labor on the repairs, and we will charge you more for the parts than we paid for them. (Confession from an automobile technician). Thats how we make our living. Mechanic shops have a lot of overhead with the cost of the shop, the cost of the land the shop is on, (i.e, real estate), all of the overpriced tools we have to buy, and our continuing education ($) to stay up-to-date with the ever changing engineering of todays automobiles. Thats the price you pay for the independence and freedom of automobile ownership. If you dont like it, sell your car and take the bus. Rant-over.
