Ok. Time for a train of thought. Im back in Chicago, and my roomie Patrick Rooney and I spend an afternoon playing Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare on his new PS4. Its a rip-roarin good time. He leaves, and I fire up the single player so I can actually learn what Im doing. As Im going through tutorial levels, two voices stand out to me. One, obviously, is Kevin Spacey, who turns even generic video game writing into Gold. Two is the protagonist. Something in his voice tone is rich and delicious. I google the actor. Troy Baker. Of course. Duh. Hes in every game and hes fabulous in them all. Sometimes, well say that about an actors work because we like the way he looks, but many have never seen what Baker looks like. Overcome with a desire to see Baker in the studio, working, live, I google Troy Baker Studio. I click on this. https://youtube/watch?v=ZdEPZ1VaP6k Its performance cap of a scene from The Last of Us, Naughty Dogs last release for PS3 and one of the most narratively stunning games Ive ever seen. The experience of playing it was on par with some of the best movies Ive ever seen in the sense that were involved and engaged in an incredibly well written story, where the stakes are high and the characters struggle is real. The struggle is real. So as I watch, I look up the final result: the cutscene from the game.
