Ok dog experienced friends, I need help with this adorable boy... how do you gain respect from a very bull headed/stubborn dog. If he doesnt want to do something you are trying to get him to do and/or discipline him for having something he shouldnt (ex. go into crate or take shoes away from him), he will tell us very disrespectful and inappropriately NO by nipping and growling. Somewhere in his life he learned this works and people will back off and he gets what he wants. He has been returned due to this disrespect and bounced around to many foster homes. The funny thing... He backs down and respects EVERY dog on this planet. He is like the opposite of a typical pit bull. He is NOT like this all of the time. He is SUPER smart! In 3 days Ive trained him to wait when I open his crate or outside door, then I wait until he looks at me for permission. He knows hes not allowed in the kitchen so he lays at the door way. He is VERY obedient when it comes to sit, stay, lay down, we dont need to ask twice. However, he does not come when called most of the time. He is a lover too, you can tell he wants to love. He cuddled with my husband since day one, he just started cuddling with me today. He is more disrespectful towards women then men. He is a pretty freaking awesome dog, with the exception of his bull headed attitude. Im determined to help this boy and get him to an adoptable state. He needs to learn he doesnt make leadership decisions and he is a follower. Per feedback we received before transport, he was GREAT with all dogs, kids, people and cats. He never had any disrespectful behavior with anybody in Kentucky. He was used to temperament test dogs & cats in shelter because he was so docile. With that said, I KNOW he has got it in him, I just need to find the right communication on how to teach him this is completely & utterly inappropriate and not acceptable. Im open to any and all positive feedback.
