What is that woman thinking??? Face Book messages that covered an entire lifetime—home-town friends; relatives; Hyannis, Ogallala, and Broken Bow students/colleagues; bridge-playing partners; rodeo families; recent friends. Each name reminded me of a connection and launched me on a nostalgic journey to long-ago times and far-away places. What would a birthday be without gifts? A real downer in my book. Lucky for me, G stepped up to the plate. He was in the hayfield when I got home, but on the table I spied a gift bag. Never one to wait patiently, I ripped into the bag and found the present—a ring with a turquoise stone. When I saw it, I had that squiggly feeling I used to have when I was an excited little girl. That ring took me back to a long-ago birthday when Mom and Dad bought me—you guessed it—a ring with a turquoise stone. History repeated itself today. I felt just as loved as I did as a child but also felt a quick pang of loneliness for my parents. A meal G cooked especially for me finished off the day, and that too evoked a flood of emotions. Birthdays with Mom were always huge gatherings with fine food and laughter, but we all have scattered and don’t get together as in the past. Gratitude for what I have, appreciation for those I love, memories of those no longer here. How about that for a bundle of thoughts? Metacognition—According to a former principal of mine, that’s thinking about thinking. What am I thinking? That my life is pretty darned great, thanks to each of you. (P.S. You Arthur friends will know how cool this is--Marge Cross just called me!)
