Ok engine gurus around here, this is long-winded, but please stick with me. Im looking for some input and advice for my 79 300 six. Some may have seen Im fixing to boost one for some serious streetable hauling torque--ON A BUDGET--while still getting decent mileage. Shooting for probably around 15lbs, but Im open to suggestion. Im also running better fuel quality with bi-fuel E85/CNG (around 105/106 octane respectively). So: 1.) Supercharger or turbo? I dont have the best fab skills and I have EFI manifolds right now too (i.e. more difficult to turbo with space constraints, etc.). A supercharger just seems more bolt-on to me, especially with 300 serpentine pulleys readily available at the yard. An M90 from a T-bird with later rotors and other work seems like my best bet as far as price goes. There are some Cummins Holset turbos local though that are decently cheap. 2.) Carburetor or EFI? I have the a 4bbl. carb intake now, but EFI is only a junkyard away. From what Ive learned, they offer some pretty straightforward tuning and computer setups for the Mustang 5.0 EEC-IV ECUs that are programmable for a six. Carburetor is simpler to bolt together, but requires mechnical tuning. EFI will be more wiring, but simpler to tune. Keep in mind this is BUDGET. No custom shop CNCing, TIG welders etc. Just basic tools, MIG welder, and basic engine shop work. Mostly all DIY. I also want to keep most of the parts involved cheap and plentiful (as in local parts stores and junkyards). Engine will be 0-decked, bored as needed, Engintech premium kit (hyper pistons), mild head porting by yours truly, COMP 260 cam, larger valves, 1.7 BBC roller rockers and ARP rocker studs, ARP head studs, ARP con rod bolts, and probably the crank/rods/pistons balanced. Compression should be factory, around 8.5:1 or so. Thanks in advance!! :D
