Ok, so, my fellow techies... Youve got a guy on the phone who cannot get out to the internet. He seems competent, hes claiming he has a DNS issue. You log into his modem, and from there you can ping out to google, yahoo, and bing. You run a lan poll and see that his device is connected to the modem, complete with the correct IP, and so presumably the correct gateway and DNS servers. The DNS server itself is alive, and youre using it yourself so you know thats a non-issue. Traceroutes from the modem show no looping and latency ranging from 1 to 40 ms on any given hop to the DNS server. The customer has tried multiple devices, each connected directly to the gateway. The configuration has been verified on the NIC each time. So, weve ruled out a failed cable, there are no switches involved, the routing is working, DNS is working, the customer equipment is either working or is ALL broken, and the customer is now irate that its taken 25 minutes to run all of these tests and you cant figure out what the hell is wrong. What would you do?
