Ok...so this will be long and it wont be pleasant but it is necessary. And if anyone who is a friend is offended feel free to unfriend me. That being said, I recently saw some promo ads for Centric tv...proclaiming it to be the first network designed for Black women...where women said they were happy to see people who look like them. After I had seen it a couple of times I had to chuckle because I was thinking there werent a lot of women who look like me. I appreciate the diversity that Black women have always enjoyed. So many shapes and shades, hair types and sizes of hips and lips! But looking at these ladies had me asking who are these people? And what did they do with all the folks that look like me? They dont look Black...(I know, that is soooo racist)....but they dont! Their lips are thinned out, noses too,,,their hair took me back to the movie about Black women and weave...almost everybody had it. The women I remembered from past years look nothing like they did before....they look different...but they dont look like me. But alas, to each his own...I suppose when you arrive you have every right to fix yourself up....but why do you no longer want to look like the Black woman the network is dedicated to? So tonight I decided to take a look at Centrics Facebook page. WOW...what an eye opener! Amid all the trash talk about entertainers (Black) and their problems and issues was a post about Mia Love...a Black woman ...the first Black Republican female elected to Congress. I was sickened to read the most vicious posts calling her a sellout, puppet, mouthpiece,...you get the picture. They were saying this because this Black woman is a Republican and married to a white man according to the posts. Because of this she is not a real Black woman and her historical victory is not celebrated. Can we as a people really be this stupid? I am not surprised by the mean spirit of these posts and that is unfortunate. But do we as people of color really think that there is a political party that stays up nights trying to figure out ways to help people of color? Are we not intelligent enough to say this candidate most closely stands for the ideals that I believe in and remain Black when we do so? And in 2014 are Black people bashing a Black woman because she has a white husband, but think it is perfectly ok for Black women in masse to change their appearance so much that they are unrecognizable as a Black woman? If we truly want to eradicate racism and bigotry in this countrys, lets start with us. Congresswoman elect Love says her election was not based on her race or gender but rather on her principles and integrity. We as people of color should display some integrity and dignity. Yes I know this is not true of all people of color, and my comments are directed at those who publicly and privately hold the views of those I saw on the centric page. We need to be willing to meet racism and bigotry head on...even if it begins in our own back yard.
