This book came about after I had been researching the waltz, the dance craze that swept Europe at the beginning of the 19th century. It was danced very differently from todays twirling, gliding dance. It starts slowly, La March, then had a quicker section (Sauteuse) and ended with a very energetic section (Jetté) where the couple twirled and skipped. It was considered shocking at the time, because men and womens would be touching, rather than just the tips of their fingers. This cartoon from the time shows that it was not considered very risqué when it first came to England. But you cant keep a good dance down. It became all the rage, and now is one of the most stylish and romantic of dances. So, do you like dancing, what do you think is the most romantic, an elegant ballroom dance, a smooch on the dance floor, or perhaps watching the experts perform a ballet? Do tell.
