“Okay Buddy, let’s go. I check my pocket for my keys making sure I didn’t lock us out again. I would have had to call Willie to let us back in.” As Farley and I head out for our morning walk I pray a prayer of thanksgiving for my son who is willing to do anything to help Karen and I. Thank you Father for this man, my son, which you have blessed us with. I don’t know what we would do without him.” We turn on Bowen and head for the intersection. I continue praying, “Father, please help Bob, my friend, who is sitting in a wheelchair alone within an assisted living apartment, blind, and disabled at the age of 73. Grant this veteran the strength and restoration that only you can provide. He puts on a strong front, but I know he is full of fear and loneliness.” We arrive at the intersection and cross safely. We then head to the park and complete our two rounds. Farley stops each time we pass by a certain trash can where we sometimes dispose of his droppings. Giving him a few kibbles each time ensures he never misses it. That sure beats carrying around a bag of Poop. “What a gorgeous dog,” I hear a lady say. “Thank you, he is pretty special,” I reply. A little boy who is accompanying her speaks up saying, “You’re doing very well.” “Thanks my friend.” Farley and I continue down the walk. I drop the harness handle and Farley stops. I pull out my I-Phone and tell Seri, “Open compass.” The app opens and we begin heading north towards Wimbledon.” We find the curb line and I put the phone back in my pocket. As we follow the curb line and head back home, I think about Rich who is serving in Afghanistan. “Father, surround this brave man with your guardian angels and protect him from the evil that would destroy him. He is a very good man.” We arrive at the intersection of Bowen and Green Oaks once again. While we are standing and waiting on the light, I hear a loud truck pull up alongside of us. “Hey Kent,” I hear a voice I recognize call out. “Hello Mike,” I say to my friend, the UPS driver, “How are you?” “I am good. How is Farley doing?” “He is a little hot right now. You know he is from New Jersey, he doesn’t like this Texas weather.” Mike yells out over his loud truck, “Well take care. I am turning right, but I will wait on you and tell you when to go. It was good seeing you again.” “Okay Mike, thanks. It was good hearing your voice too.” He gives us the signal to go and we do. After reaching the curb line for our block, I thank God for helping us to complete another trip without any problems. It has been a year and a half since Farley and I were partnered up. Thank God I decided to go to the Seeing Eye and team up with him. What a blessing.
