Okay, Im probably gonna step on some toes, but here goes. This video has been making some rounds and it has become a bit of a refrain for folks who want to go the race doesnt matter route, this guy being the proverbial black friend that gives you the license to squash conversations. I dont wanna attack this guy, but I do want to attack the argument, as its important to debate potentially dangerous perspectives. I agree that its important to grasp on to a firm sense of self, be critical of culture (esp. your own), and to learn from the past. Thats fine. BUUUUUUUT.... The premise that we jettison the past, that we diminish the concept of race, and immediately leap to the idea of being a post-modern intellectual ubermensch is definitely putting the cart before the horse. Like learning to run before you can stand up. Buying nice furniture for an apartment that is festering with mold. This simplifies a complex problem, and suggests that we deal w/ race in a vacuum that simply hits the delete button on an whole lot of cause, which in turn has a lot of present day effect. This isnt a view thats unique to this video at all, and I would urge you to question these simple solutions to obviously complicated issues. Small chip off shoulder. Off to draw now.
