The products and by-products of lipid peroxidation are cytotoxic and lead in successive steps to oxidative stress, oxidative damage and apoptosis. In a long series of physiological and pathophysiological processes, including aging and neurodegenerative diseases, the rates of mitochondrial O2.- and H2O2 are increased with a parallel increase in the rate of the lipid peroxidation process.
