Okay, here is my update. First, I will only apologize this one time: I am going to use Facebook as a bit of a blog, support system, advisory board, and general info place on this crazy new twist in my health status. Second, I am happy for comments but please no major negativity--its bad enough as it is. So, starting over a week ago, I got some blood work that indicated that my Type-2 Diabetes was not getting worse, but was not improving and we needed to make some moves on diet and meds. I also have elevated liver enzymes and this worries the doctors because they never go down...but they have been elevated since my first bloodwork in 1979, so I dont know what to do there. Finally, my trigylcerides were really high...I am on a med to try to help control that for the next 3 months and well check it again. In the midst of this, I have been dealing with what I thought was a localized infection in my gums. When I went to the dentist, he absolutely FREAKED OUT and essentially told me I was going to lose ALL my teeth and very soon. This (of course) FREAKED ME OUT and I got pretty upset. We got into a periodontist-implant guy the next day (Wednesday) and I spent almost 3 hours getting examined, scraped, scaled, debrided, etc. where it became clear that things were in fact, pretty bad. What I have been gifted with is a HORRIBLE perfect storm of neglect and decay, hereditary periodontal disease, diabetes, and a nasty upper respiratory infection that resisted 2 rounds of antibiotics...and these all came together in an explosion of acute necrotic bacterial infections in my gums. These infections have expanded into my neck glands and created NASTY and painful lumps, and also likely exacerbated my blood sugar issues. Apparently I am lucky that this did not find its way to my heart, which has been known to be fatal.
