Okay, heres a nice noncontroversial group-hug inducing topic for our friends and neighbors out there in computerland. The trend of uniformed personnel returning from deployment and surprising their loved ones in a public forum (graduation, football game, prom, school play, whatever) and making them cry is completely and utterly played the hell out, and needs to stop. Especially when children are involved. Great, Timmys dad came home early. Maybe Janeys mom will come home tomorrow. Or the next day. Kids of a certain age fall prey to magical thinking, and this stuff doesnt help. Its not just your kids special occasion, its the special occasion of every family who has a kid participating, military or not. Feed the ego elsewhere. The kid will be just as happy to come home from school and see you waiting inside the front door. YouTube home videos are bad enough, but its especially odious when the media is tipped off to the homecoming (yeah, they cover ALL school plays). Feed the need for attention elsewhere, comrades in arms. This practice is not helpful. Thanks for your service.
