Okay, so Im in. My number is 13, so heres 13 things you might not know about me. Like or comment and I give you a number...blah, blah, blah. 1. My name is Chip...and Im different. 2. I was *this close* to a PhD in Speech Communication before it all fell apart. Depression, bad choices, bad breaks...the end result was one epic case of writers block that I just couldnt overcome. 3. Overall I spent 16 years in college, though for several of those years I was also on the faculty at other universities while I (supposedly) worked on my dissertation. When the day finally came that I got the letter where the University of Texas kicked me out of their doctoral program, all I can remember feeling is a deep sense of relief. Its unlikely, though, that I will ever be able to completely pay off my student loans. 4. When I was 7, I shot some baskets with Pistol Pete Maravich on the goal he had set up in the driveway at his house down the street from where I lived. I didnt recognize who he was, but I do remember showing him this under-hand scoop, reverse layup I had been practicing. 5. For 4 years I taught every Social Studies & History class, 7 - 12 grade, at a charter school in Austin, Tx. That was the best job I ever had, and by far the most difficult. {Several of my former students and colleagues are friends of mine here on Facebook, and Im confident they know I love them dearly.} 6. I was the subject of a series of several exposé stories appearing on the tabloid television shows A Current Affair and Inside Edition. And just for the record: When you meet him in person, Bill OReilly is a lot taller than you expect...and a much bigger idiot. 7. I saw Chuck Berry play a concert at the Blue Note in Columbia, Missouri, and that night I danced with Queen Latifah. 8. I can throw a frisbee very, very far, and for 2 years played a handler position on the University of Texas ultimate frisbee team. I also played for a club-level team named the Drunken Lemurs, where I authored the teams signature cheer: Broken neck or broken femur, nothing stops a Drunken Lemur. 9. I was in love once, and knowing what that is like makes it difficult to remain in a relationship that feels other than the all-encompassing feeling of rapture that I know is possible. I enjoy dating, but to be honest, Im looking for the *real thing*. 10. When I was 5, I was buried alive under a ton of sand that collapsed on top of me. An alert woman doing dishes in her kitchen noticed something seemed different about the sandpile I had been playing in, and then ran out of her house screaming until neighbors came and dug me out, saving my life. 11. Its nearly impossible for me to walk down a gravel road without stopping to pick up rocks that strike me as somehow *special*. I have dozens, maybe hundreds of them, stashed around in various places, and its not uncommon for me to carry one around in my pocket for days. 12. Sometimes, when Ive had a bit too much tequila, I fall into a character who has become somewhat of my alter-ego. His name is Paper Plate ~ a blind, white midget rap-star, who grew up thinking he was both black and tall. Its commonly known among my closest friends that when I take off my shoes and start rapping, Its time to take Chip home. 13. My strong political beliefs are rooted in the fact that a close family member was, at one time, a high-ranking government official. I refuse to give up the idea that effective government is the appropriate place for citizens to come together in order to solve communal problems.
