Okay, so Ive got some issues with this. The biggest issue I have is with the timing of this. This article hijacks the healthy conversation about domestic violence in favor of a lets kick the NFL because public sentiment swings in our favor. Stop. Please, lets keep talking about domestic violence across society -- and not just NFL-borne domestic violence. Next up is the distortion of facts. The headline and the teaser quote suggest that the NFL enjoys around $9 billion of tax-free revenue per year. The teams pay taxes and the bulk of the $9 billion dollars goes to the teams, and then to the owners, who are taxed. The owners also have a league and it is that specific entity that is not taxed. I dont know how its all sliced and diced, but I believe that each of the 32 NFL teams sends the league around $6 million per year and there are various NFL properties that generate revenue retained by the league office. And all of it is revenue that the IRS should be dipping into as long as I have to pay taxes. Its just not the heinous giveaway that this article (and dozens of others that Ive seen) try to make it out to be. The argument for taxing the NFL league office is compelling enough without having to persuade people by lying to them. Its also an argument worth shelving, for now, to avoid creating the impression that well put a dent in domestic violence by making the NFL pay its fair share of taxes. The timing for this beat-down is perfect...but, really, it mostly sucks. JH
