Okay, this is a long post, sooooo... If you arent into reading long posts, and hate clicking see more. Just keep scrolling... ;) Last night I got my wittle feelers butt hurt because of the negative comments offered to the college football team I support. Im over it this morning. I do wish to share my story of how I became such a rabid college football fan, and why I root for the team I do. I grew up in New York as a wee little cheeseburger. I lived in Chesapeake Virginia in Junior and Senior High. College football was followed, but not nearly as rabidly as in the Southeast and the fans of the SEC! Mid-Atlantic area was Basketball country, which I did not play or follow. Now this doesnt mean college football wasnt watched, it was pretty much restricted to the big time National Rivalries: Army/Navy, Michigan/Michigan State, Ohio State/Michigan and being Catholic and Celtic, Notre Dame football. I grew up a rabid NFL fan! When I was a little kid in New York, and didnt really understand the sport, my loyalties changed every few years as teams moved in and out of favor with my friends. When I moved to Va. I shifted into more of a fan of one team, becoming a Washington Redskins fan! It was good. In the very early 80s I moved to Jacksonville, FL. I was still a Redskins fan, and because there werent any Jaguars then, Most people in the area were fans of either the Miami Dolphins, or the home team from where they grew up! (Side note, Jacksonville is still a very diverse NFL community. Sure the Jaguars are the home team, but almost every one also roots for their Home team). Shortly after moving here I was informed that I would need to pick a College Team to support, because that was just the way it was. In the first year or two of living here I had plenty of encounters with two of the SEC teams for the area; The Gators, and The Bulldogs. Huge Rivalry, and in those days the two teams that permeated the Jacksonville fan base. I quickly found the majority of either teams fans to be quite annoying and offensive. There was another team in Florida, it wasnt a huge National Powerhouse yet. They werent in a conference, and they did Well! More to the point their fans werent overboard (yet) as they were still referred to as That Team from the Girls School. The reason I finally picked them to be my team was very simple and had nothing to do with wins and losses or anything to do with football really. Their uniforms so closely matched my beloved Redskins I found it very easy to like them. Years went by, and they got better. They played many of the Power House schools, Notre Dame, Miami, Penn State, Oklahoma, Florida, etc. And they started getting invites to Bowl games and put together a rather impressive Bowl record! I had friends here who were involved with the local booster club, and through them had several opportunities to meet and interact with their Head Coach, and through these interactions became more and more supportive. Finally, one day, I happened to cut myself and to my surprise my blood came out Garnet and Gold! Without realizing it I had converted from Catholicism to Seminolism! My new church leader, Saint Bobby! The Seminoles went on to become a National Powerhouse team and sadly, with that came the wave of bandwagon fans and their bad behaviors that all teams have associated with them. I have stuck with my team through good times, bad times and back to good times. And, even though it has been 30 years, I still dont understand or approve of ANY teams fans bad behavior. So, this is my story, Nothing to really comment on. I havent said anything that needs to be refuted or corrected so no one needs to take me to task. It is just a story, about me and College Football. Have a great day! Be Good to Each Other! Be True to your School!
