Okay yall... I saw the biopic.... I purposefully forgot about the film and didnt read reviews as to try to be objective--which is hard because this is Aaliyah... as a 80s/90s baby, shes my idol. I adore her and still miss her. The film school student in me cringes that the movie seemed very rushed and half-assed edited-- and Ill be honest... the casting wasnt just bad... it was just--like-- these are the best we could do. I dont recognize anyone-- Missy? Timbaland? ...Dame Dash? And I keep backtracking that R. Kelly is NOT Joe. It has artistic merit in the shots and art direction (well... maybe not art direction.) The screenwriter in me pissed that they worked R. Kelly storyline... The scene where Kells looks like he is going to cry because her father is vehemently against the marriage-- You want me to drum up sympathy for a guy that I think is a creep? Humanize the idea of a child bride? Yeah... sure... kay. I feel that they tried to work the theme that Aaliyah was in fact, one in a million. She was different. She was smart. She was beautiful. And I guess they made all the people around her extra just so that they could be a foil to her. Love the Grandmother though--I know how Aaliyah adored her grandma. (check out the CD jacket from her self-titled album). And the Aaliyah fan in me is like Why did Wendy Williams attach herself to this? Why didnt she use this to work on getting HER biopic to air somewhere--which was shot-- I know, I was an intern at the Mayors Office during principal photography. The biopic could have been done--just not with Lifetime. Lifetime highlights sensationalism--hence the sympathy for Kells. If VH1 had done it, it might have been like the TLC biopic. All in all-- I give the movie a low C-. Not cause Aaliyah is my big sister in my head, but because the timeline of the biopic just didnt go anywhere. I could have written, shot and edited this--when I was 22. See More
