Old Globe costumes to be offered at auction BRENDA.HARWOOD @thestar.co.nz As final plans for the Globe Theatre redevelopment take shape, the fundraising push will continue with a fashion parade and auction next Wednesday. A grant of $7500 from the Bendigo Valley Foundation, received last week along with several individual donations, has brought the funds raised so far to about $465,000. However, with the additional costs of consents and consultancy fees, the final target had risen slightly to $550,000 from the original $500,000, Friends of the Globe Theatre chairwoman Dr Rosemary Beresford said. Major funding organisations and Lotteries had given the project an extension on the time needed to raise the total funds, which was very helpful. The funds would now need to be in place by April, Dr Beresford said. ‘‘We are still on track for Amalgamated Builders to start work in late January, which is very exciting,’’ she said. The redevelopment project would be done in three parts, starting with the replacement of the roof and water› damaged wall, then moving on to earthquake strengthening, and finally fire safety improvements. The whole process is expected to take about six months. With the construction work on the horizon, the Friends of the Globe were now turning their attention to clearing out some of the rooms which house thousands of costumes. ‘‘Because we are having to empty the Period Room completely, we thought this would be a good opportunity to have a fashion parade and sell off some of the costumes we no longer need,’’ Dr Beresford said. The Our Treasures Fashion Parade and Auction event, to be held next Wednesday at 7pm, will include pieces dating back as far as the 1920s and 1930s. The event is being organised by Roz McKechnie and Nina Duke›Howard.
