Old dogs and arthritis. Unfortunately they go together fairly - TopicsExpress

Old dogs and arthritis. Unfortunately they go together fairly often. The traditional treatments for arthritis in dogs (and humans) rely largely on NSAIDs, which have potentially serious side effects, so they should probably not be the first choice in dealing with old dog arthritis. Talk to your veterinarian about some of the alternatives discussed here for your old dogs stiffness and pain. But please remember that quality of your old dogs life is more important than quantity. If only an NSAID will offer relief to the pain and stiffness of advanced arthritis, it is worth it to your old friend. Here at the Sanctuary, we use alternative methods of arthritis treatment (fish oil, glucosamine, and others), but when our old dogs need the relief that an NSAID can offer, we do not hesitate to administer it. Of course, we do frequent blood tests and check ups to be sure our old dog is tolerating the NSAID and not suffering any organ damage or serious side effects. But it is good to be informed about the choices available.
