Older Now She Smiles Still takes time to climb those majestic steps just a moment ago she seemed to leap 3 at a time her hair unbraided shadow long falls a curtain across her face dims the light her unblemished beauty poured as kindling for our chilled hearts to set a fire bold enough so ardent passion could flow unblocked by sore ice chunked in wounded heaps frozen pain she teaches through movement let awakened eyes catch lessons as she goes so will we longer or sooner than our fancy mind would make us believe liar thoughts shut up, calmed down sit get off yourself and into this second sip the prayer dripped from her stiffening lips that wondrous sound that wraps me up a grandeur sandwich loved in all my puke n stink my booze damp feet, my nicotine stupidity my mind a creaky bus ride from my navel never going farther than what miles my ripped underwear can stretch oh man oh woman can we ever again splash into nights solace pond wash ourselves back into our real skins inhale wild mustang air wild run across whats left of opened plains or do ghosts too many clog the way the wail of tears history tries to hide between the spaces in its books block our journey garden back the penance the grandmother points to with her walking stick standing for a moment to catch her breathe pang stuck by passionate youth now piles of fold ashes snail blood curled up in its shell motherhood quiet canyon dry where ancient soft palms press the old dream into polished stones so wisdom fills the vacant womb i stand late transfixed before her shrinking body feel the speechless kiss that speaks so much about sandy glasses space for time the one i could not hear in the kitchen of my youth the one i feel now more than for myself more for the world my flesh holds in safe keeping my aching hands attempt to pass on to every creature here what flickers still loves persistent starry vigil so close so fingertip distant (C) Jeff Cannon, 03/24/2014, 6:25 am, at desk
