Reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert are D.C. musicians and songwriters who worked with John Denver including being part of his summer replacement show on TV. Bill and Taffy were recording then under the name Fat City. Later, they would also record as the Starland Vocal Band. You can clearly hear Taffys backup vocals on this song. One of my favorite stories about this song is that they were no where near West Virginia when they wrote this song. They were driving along Clopper Road around Germantown, MD which was a country road back then.
