Olive fruit fly is a serious pest for Sonoma County. Because of our mild climate, it can be active all year and destroy an entire crop. An egg laid in each olive hatches and eats the pulp, causing the fruit to rot. Pest management involves a combination of monitoring, sanitation, baited traps (bait changed every 2 weeks April through November) and barrier sprays applied as the fruit begins to be attacked in late summer/early fall. Read UCs IPM guidance for more information. Fallen fruit should be picked up and destroyed.
