Olympic silver medallist Sonia OSullivan will be in Clare this weekend to encourage the women of Clare to get and stay active, as part of the Clare Sports Partnership’s focus on participation in sports and physical activity. On Friday evening at 7.00pm, Clare Sports Partnership in association with Shannon Leisure Centre will launch the county’s first all-sport High Performance Academy. The Shannon Leisure Centre High Performance Academy was in set up as a response to cater for the needs of the many talented young sports people in the Shannon area, which excel in their sports and have a real opportunity to make it to the elite teams of their sport – County, National, International. There are 9 athletes at present in the academy:- Tommy Walsh (Basketball), Lisa O’Shea (Golf), Aron Shanagher and Ben O’Gorman (Hurling), Karl Fitzmaurice (Athletics), Liam Alford (Kickboxing), Joanne Potter (Taekwon-do), Sabrina Mc Carthy (Soccer), James Hanrahan (Mountainbiking). The aim of the academy is to support training and give some financial assistance to aid our local young talented athletes. Places are rewarded on outstanding past performances and more importantly, strong evidence of future achievement potential. The academy will give the talented young people the opportunity of developing their sporting career by offering the highest standards in coaching, training, nutrition, strength and conditioning advice, whilst also going to school / college and living locally. By combining sports participation without the added pressure of financing gym and pool membership, a safety net is provided for the athlete. It is our intention to develop a sustainable programme where the individual is also provided with financial support and encouraged through judicious balancing of the time available to ensure that neither academic nor sporting interests are compromised. The launch evening is open to the public to come along and meet the athletes and indeed Sonia O’Sullivan. Proceedings start at 7.00pm in Shannon Leisure Centre.
