Omar is CM of Kashmir? IIT for Jammu 7/14/2014 12:24:28 AM Rustam JAMMU, July 13: Pro-autonomy and fundamentally sectarian working president of National Conference Omar Abdullah is not Chief Minister of the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh; he is Chief Minister just of the Kashmir Valley. He, like others of his ilk in Kashmir, considers Jammu and Ladakh Kashmirs colonies and the people of these two regions no more than slaves of Kashmiris. Its no wonder that Omar Abdullah and similar other Kashmiri leaders like him have become highly unpopular in both Jammu and Ladakh. Omar Abdullahs Saturday attack on the Union Government that sanctioned one Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) for Jammu was so blistering, outrageous and provocative that he and his party will have to pay a very heavy price in the coming Assembly elections. On Saturday, Omar Abdullah charged the BJP-led NDA government with brazenly discrimination against Kashmir by allotting IIT only to Jammu region and also took to task the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying it was hand-in-glove with the BJP. He accused the PDP MPs of maintaining what he called criminal silence over the matter. The conspicuous silence maintained by PDP and its MPs over this lopsided and discriminatory decision of the BJP government proved the opposition partys covert understanding with BJP to divide the state on regional lines by engineering a rift between Kashmir and Jammu regions…They want to perpetuate regional polarization in the state for mutual electoral interests as was done in parliament elections, he said, thus indicating his utter contempt and bias for the people of Jammu province, Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs included. All these were wild and preposterous allegations and no Chief Minister worth his/her name would ever indulge in such provocative and divisive political games. He completely overlooked the fact that his government perpetrated injustice after injustice on Jammu and Ladakh during his over five-year-long rule or misrule, whatever one may consider. Significantly, Mirwaiz Omar Farooq also said something same about the BJP governments decision to set up IIT in Jammu and just a day before a number of vested interests in the Valley had condemned the Union budget and accused the BJP government of according a preferential treatment to Jammu and Ladakh. Referring to the Union budget and IIT, Mirwaiz cautioned against ignoring the political dimension of Kashmir issue. The fact of the matter is that Omar Abdullah conducted himself in a most irresponsible manner on Saturday and his attack on the BJP government would prove a last nail in the coffin of the NC as far as its relevance in Jammu is concerned. Omar Abdullah not only crossed the line by accusing the PDP of flirting with the BJP, which is not the case as both the parties stand for different type of politics, but also took credit for something he and his party didnt do. The case in point is the establishment of Central University in Jammu. It was not he and his government who got the Central University for Jammu. It was the pressure exerted by the Jammu youth, which was also coupled with a two-month-long agitation plus a massive bandh, that forced the authorities to concede the demand of the Jammu youth. The government of Omar Abdullah would have collapsed had the Union Government sanctioned Central University for Jammu. Such was the situation in Jammu province at that time. Omar Abdullah would do well not to make unnecessary noises taking into consideration the credential of his own government. He must appreciate the fact that the ignored Jammu province and Ladakh region deserve much more and his government has not left any stone unturned to marginalize Jammu and Ladakh.
