On 17 March, 2014, my brother John hung himself in my garage. He had mental illness. He should have been treated, not criminalized. He did not have to die a senselessly stupid death. I blame the Oklahoma State Legislature for dismantling the States mental health system. The private prison system is the States de facto mental health system, criminalizing mental illness, and enriching the very few, at the expense of millions. Today, tomorrow, the next day, the day after that, and so on, until the law and attitudes change on mental illness, there will be more senselessly stupid suicides. If you are in pain and have suicidal thoughts, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE talk to someone, ANYONE. I guarantee it will be better tomorrow, sparing your family and friends of needless pain. To remember his legacy, the Big Bad John Road Trip To Stop Senselessly Stupid Suicides will roll Tulsa streets, until further notice or the State Legislature passes Johns Law, to rebuild the States mental health system, giving proper care to those who can least able to care for themselves.
