On 8 March 1887, EVERETT HORTON, from Bristol, Connecticut, received a patent for his steel telescoping fishing rod. HORTON invented the rod because he wanted to go fishing on Sunday, something that was prohibited in the somewhat puritanical township of Bristol. HORTON solved his problem by building a a telescoping steel rod which he could hide up his sleeve. HORTONs invention became the foundation of the Horton Manufacturing Company, which made a whole line of casting and fly-fishing BRISTOL STEEL RODS. At the beginning of the 20th century, BRISTOL RODS were the most popular fishing rods in the nation, and are today highly collectable.
