On April 10, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff received an up-close look at several habitat restoration projects in San Diego Bay. Nancy Ferguson, Pacific Southwest Region Sikes Act Coordinator, and David Zoutendyk, Division Chief, and Tannika Engelhard, Fish and Wildlife Biologist, both from Carlsbad Fish and Wildlife Office, viewed several eelgrass areas being restored and managed as part of a multi-agency conservation strategy. Eelgrass is an important resource for many species in the marine ecosystem and contributes to maintaining water quality and reducing erosion. The tour also included a look at a habitat enhancement island created by the U.S. Navy to benefit fish and wildlife. The island was created using dredged material from pier construction. This 25-acre inter-tidal/sub-tidal habitat serves a variety of water and shore birds. Walt Wilson, Biologist with Navy Region Southwest, and Mitch Perdue, Senior Biologist and Command Dive Safety Coordinator, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest, provided detailed information about the restoration efforts.
