On April 7th I sent an email to the Director at Portland Dismas. The purpose of the email was simple, to thank those that helped me become the person sitting on the other side of this keyboard today. Little did I know that this simple email would be forwarded from office to office and soon be read by the President/CEO of Dismas Charities. Last night I was at work, working on emails and was contacted and asked to come out for the filming of a documentary for the 50th anniversary of Dismas. Upon my arrival to the facility I was greeted at the door by smiles and handshakes. Soon after I was ushered into a room with cameras and mics. Today I was given the chance that I have waited so long for. Today I was able to not only tell my story but to be the voice of many. I have made it my mission to tear away the walls that seem to divide us all. We are so quick to hide the realness of the world. We act as if pain, addiction, depression, and many ailments never exist. Society has no way to heal because it uses its resources to mask these problems. My story is no different than yours. We all make bad decisions and can only hope to learn from them. Today there was no division between myself, the director, the President/Ceo and others in the room. For an hour we were all equals. We laughed and cried together and when the interview was over we all hugged one another. I was told that I was a true inspiration. Me, Richard Davis, a recovered junky.... an inspiration. It doesnt take a cape or superhuman powers. It only takes one person standing up for what he/she believes in. When I was 3 years old I told my mother I was going to change the world... at 30 Im still trying like hell! Never be afraid to be different, never be afraid to be heard, and never...never, be afraid to be plain ol you!!! #PLAINolME
