On August 31st, Cpl. Mitch Oliver, Cpl. Jeremy Bolen, and Sgt. Jim Bradfield responded to an in progress complaint from Alabama Wildlife Officer Ron Davidson of spearing fish on the Chattahoochee River in Harris County. Officers observed five males spearing multiple species of fish and hiding their spearing gear and stringers of fish out in the river. Eventually the subjects made their way to the shoreline without any equipment or fish in their possession. A search of the area by Sgt. Bradfield and Cpl. Oliver yielded three fishing spears, one diving mask, and an empty stringer. After the officers detained and questioned the individuals, they were eventually led back to one stringer of fish. Soon after, RFC Epps and Cpl. Bolen began searching by boat and located another spear and stringer of fish with assistance from the bank by Cpl. Oliver. A total of 68 fish - 41 bass, 9 bream, 2 crappie, 2 catfish, 2 striped bass, 1 shad, and 11 carp were confiscated. All five subjects were arrested for spearing fish without a resident license, spearing game fish/catfish, spearing fish with improper equipment, and failure to allow inspection of wildlife. All of the fish were donated to a local food bank.
