On December 16th, 1944 Hitler began the Ardennes offensive, (Battle of the Bulge) with the plan of breaking through the allied lines and retaking the port at Antwerp. The resulting battle was some of the fiercest of the war and it was fought in the midst of the coldest winter that Europe had seen for nearly a century. My father was serving as a rifleman in the 30th Infantry Division during the fighting in Belgium that winter. Below is a German officers SA Dagger and Iron Cross that he took from a German officer that didnt needem anymore during the battle.
