On December 26, 2013, I found a lump in my right breast. I was so scared. I remembered thinking that I just had a mammogram in June and it was normal. I was diligent with my mammograms. When did this lump appear? I scheduled my appointment. The doctor thought it could be a large fluid filled cyst but sent me on for a mammogram. During my exam, the radiation techs said I had dense breasts and scar tissue from a previous lumpectomy in 2006 which turned out to be a benign cyst. The radiation tech and dr both said the mammogram appeared normal but referred me to a surgeon for a biopsy. I had the core biopsy on Jan 30th. I was diagnosed with Stage 3A Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer on Feb 3, 2014. I still remember that call. It rocked my world. I felt like I was having an out of body experience. I met with my surgeon the next day. While he talked, I sat numb. Thank God my husband was there to take notes and ask questions. When the dr mentioned my options of lumpectomy, mastectomy, or bilateral mastectomy, I didnt hesitate. I chose the bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. I had the port surgery on Feb 17th. I began 4 rounds of adriamycin and cytoxan on Feb 26th. Surgery was May 24th followed by 4 rounds of Taxol on June 14th. I have my 33rd and last radiation treatment tomorrow. Then, its tamoxifen for 5 years. I pray that I have no evidence of cancer cells in my body. I feel great and positive! I believe that its gone. I posted the following video after my 32nd radiation treatment thanking my family and friends for their support. I also encourage the ladies to conduct monthly self-breast exams and schedule annual mammograms.
