Responding Troopers located the crash just north of the Springfield Rest Area and confirmed it was a single vehicle tractor trailer unit crash. Preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the tractor trailer unit, belonging to New England Motor Freight 1-71 North Avenue East Elizabeth, NJ was operated by Enkland Therepeli, 35 Based on further investigation and witness statements it is believed Therepeli was driving too fast for the existing weather conditions, which caused him to lose control of the tractor trailer unit during heavy rain conditions. As a result, the tractor and trailer struck the guard rail on the median side of the highway. The vehicle then slid across the interstate to the right side of the roadway where it came to final rest. During the crash both fuel tanks were ruptured causing the spillage of approximately 100 gallong of diesel fuel. The Trucks trailer was hauling dry food products. The load was approximately 2/3 empty and was not compromised. NH DOT, Springfield Fire & EMS and the Springfield and Grantham Police responded to assist. NH Department of Environmental Services also responded as a result of the fuel spill. Mr. Therepeli was transported by ambulance to New London hospital for what is described as non life threatening injuries. Due to the dangerous location of the crash, the guard rail damage and fuel spillage, the Interstate was limited to one lane of travel northbound. Wrecker crews and Environmental Services are expected to be on scene through the evening comute. Travelers are asked to prepare for delays or plan for possible alternate travel routes into the early evening hours.
