On Friday (yesterday) my colleague Emma carried out the funeral in Horton of a much loved local gentleman known to many many people, who sadly died so suddenly and un-expectantly. This man, who was a loving husband, father, grandfather brother and uncle, although battling serious ill health himself over the past few years, and at the same time cared for his blind wife, still managed to maintain a sense of humour that gave him a legendary status to those that knew him. Some of the pranks and scenarios that he was involved with and behind over the years were shared during the service as his brother gave a moving account encapsulating his colourful life. Also during the service was a very moving tribute delivered by two of his adoring grandaughters. They also gave their own personal reflections and memories of their grandfather which was so warmly and lovingly delivered. The coffin was carried in and out of church by family members and close friends. Within the church was a sea of Santa hats as pretty much every person in attendance wore these hats as their own tribute to their very own Father Christmas look-a-like, whom always wore his Santa hat every year from the beginning of December through to early January due to his remarkable resemblance to the big man himself. This was a specific request by family to all attendees. From the outset strict instructions were given to Emma by the family for the funeral service to be a celebration of a life lived to the full. As an on looker myself yesterday at the service I bore witness to these wishes being delivered to the full and personally, was so very proud of how my colleague Emma delivered and oversaw this remarkable occasion to the highest standard I would expect to deliver myself. In fact Emma had known the gentleman and his family herself personally and had her own very special childhood memories of this man and very much wanted to be of assistance to the family when they made contact with us initially. It’s situations like this, that by providing the small and very personal service we offer, we are able to give the one to one care, that we pride ourselves on, giving our clients (families) that sense of satisfaction and comfort that the support they are given by us is the very best. My grateful thanks to Emma for her precision and direction on the day. Our thoughts now go out to this amazing family for the future as they come to terms with adjusting to life without this larger than life character but draw upon the hundreds of memories and stories they will be able to take comfort from as they prepare to carry on their lives in the future. Grateful thanks to the family for allowing me to share the pictures and events of yesterday’s celebration of life with you to this much loved and great man.
