On Jan. 12, 2007, Springfield and surrounding areas were practically paralyzed by an ice storm like no other. That storm made national news and had long term consequences including a huge number of lost trees. Thousands went without power - some for days, many for weeks - as shelters filled, residents huddled around fireplaces, and the sound of power saws cutting fallen limbs became a new normal. We had power the whole time -- God, we were lucky.
