On July 4th 1863, 150 years ago today, the Army of Northern Virginia began its retreat from Gettysburg back toward the Potomac River. Although many of the wounded were evacuated from the field, the dead lay where they fell to be placed into shallow graves on the battlefield until the National Cemetery could be built. This marks one of the first times photography brought home the horror of battle to the civilian population. May they Rest in Peace.
