On June 1, 1945 the P-51 that my dad was flying developed engine failure. Dad parachuted out of the plane at 5,000 ft. and was picked up by a Navy ship. Twenty seven planes were lost and, more importantly, twenty five pilots perished. At the squadron reunion 12 days ago, my mom displayed the parachute, cloth maps, compass, and signal mirror that my dad used on that day. Though I dont have a picture of the mirror, my dad used it to shave with his entire life.
