On June 11, 2013, the brick house in Maine passed into the hands of a person who loves it and will live in it and will carry on the good spirit of Luthera whose beloved home it was from 1973 until she died in 2011. Her heart was always there even while her body was cared for elsewhere during her last years. When Luthera left me the house I was fully aware of the honor and love entailed. I tried to maintain it. But expense and the reality that my life and living are hundreds of miles away made it clear that I was not the right owner. I put it on the market where it was found by a lady whose heart, like Luthera’s, also yearned for Maine. We met on the day of the closing. Because my broker had told me that she loved the house I brought along copies of Luthera’s three books and a short history of the house, also written by Luthera. We met at the lawyer’s office and took an instant liking to one another. The legal formalities got done while we talked about the house. Later that afternoon we celebrated the house’s new life with champagne in the dining room. I am sure Luthera was there and I know I have done right by her and by the house. Dear new lady of the brick house, I salute you and look forward to visiting as you make your life there.
