On June 20, 2012, a week before Induction Day at the Naval Academy for the class of 16, I did my best imitation of Forrest Gump and started walking. Lost count of the months, but a little head scratching tells me its been 21 months. During that time the goalposts have kept moving on me, and its not just about walking anymore. Well, maybe it never was. One result has been that I no longer use a walker. Wore one out, gave another to a Churchlady and just loaned my off road version to a neighbor who is recovering from knee replacement surgery. For the past three weeks have done my walks with hiking sticks. Walks are now at two hours. Everyday. So theres a new goal: walk the Canyon with my son or sons. Also hoping that my stretching and massage therapy and continuing weight loss program will enable me to run again. And get rid of the sticks. On todays walk the coolest thing happened. I was cruising through a general store on the outskirts of town, just looking. As I made my way past the checkout counter on the way out a black gentleman smiled and spoke up. I see you walking. Yeah, I see you, you be walking! We chatted and shook hands and he said, God bless you. You know, sometimes Ebon; sometimes it just says it better!! Thanks to the many who have inspired and encouraged me along the way. Not done yet. Will check back in at the two year point with an update...
