On June 23, 2014 at 1542 hours while on patrol, Officer James Conaty Jr. Observed a smoke condition coming from Aldrich Plaza, located on the corner of Rt9nb and East Aldrich Road. The smoke appeared to be coming from the area of the Colonial Coffee Shop. Additional Officers arrived on scene and evacuated the other businesses in the shopping center. The fire originated in the Colonial Coffee Shop, which was closed at the time, and spread to the businesses on each side, which are Red Moon Restaurant & Pizza and China Moon Chinese Food Restaurant. All three suffered significant damage. It took approximately 30-45 minutes to extinguish the fire. Several other businesses were ventilated by the responding fire companies due to the heavy smoke. No other businesses were damaged as a result of the fire. All other businesses (except Colonial Coffee, Red Moon, China Moon) reopened for business shortly after 7pm. The following fire departments responded to the scene: Southard Fire Department, Freewood Acres Fire Department, Adelphia Fire Department, Squankum Fire Department, Ramtown Fire Department, Jackson Station #55 Fire Department and the Jackson Mills Fire Department. The Howell Police EMS unit and the Howell Township First Aid Squad responded to the scene. No injuries were reported. The investigation was turned over to Capt. Bob Lewis of the Howell Fire Bureau and Monmouth County Fire Marshall Chris Pujat. An inspector from the Monmouth County Health Department responded to the scene. As a result of the damage, China Moon, Red Moon and the Colonial Coffee Shop have been closed by the Monmouth County Health Department until further notice.
