On May 22nd the Caribbean island of Martinique celebrates Abolition Day, marking the abolition of African slavery with festivities like parades, drumming and the blowing of the conch shell. In Martinique there is much discussion of the struggles of the ancestors, but there is also continued consciousness of the current class divide between the descendants of the French bosses, the békés, and descendants of Martinican slaves. Appropriately, Jay will sing Msieu Michel, a traditional Martinican song that AATW sings during our Caribbean season that tells the tale of an increasingly violet strike in which workers demanded of their employer, Mister Michel, a raise of just two francs.
