On May 31st I posted about our family presenting our son’s memorial scholarship to a young woman at San Antonio’s Northside Health Careers High School. Yesterday we received a most gracious thank you letter from her. In the letter she restated her goal of attaining a degree in Social Work and hopefully a Masters Degree also. Her goals were clearly based on a desire to help others. Her name is Dariela Martinez. The problem with her plan is that even with our modest support, ($2,000), she may not be able to attend UTSA. I will disclose a small fact of her story here. She came to this country as an undocumented child when she was only 6 years old and has lived here with her family all that time, not knowing of her undocumented status or even what that meant for all of those years. She was unable to get a driver’s license, or a part time job. She was granted documented status by an executive order by President Obama in August 2012. Even though she is now qualified for many additional scholarships she is not always being considered and that is just not fair. I am posting this information in the hope that there are those out there who might help Dariela, by sending a gift to the San Antonio Area Foundation directed to her scholarship support. Any gifts made this way would be non tax deductible. The reason the gifts would be not tax deductible is because they would be dedicated to a specific person. Non Tax deductible gifts can be made to: The San Antonio Area Foundation 303 Pearl Pkwy #114 San Antonio, Texas 78215 Marked for Dariela Martinez Scholarship Support.
