On Monday, I filed SJR 10 to promote religious tolerance and protect the cherished and long-established right to religious freedom. This resolution mimics language which currently exists in state statute and proposes a referendum put to the voters to add religious freedom language to our state constitution. Other states have put similar language in their constitutions and Texans of all faiths and backgrounds deserve the same guarantee of our liberties as these states provide their citizens. That some have purposefully misrepresented this bill as changing Texas law to allow discrimination is greatly disappointing and wholly inaccurate. Freedom of conscience is one of our most sacred rights going back to the founding of our nation and this resolution is designed to promote diversity of thought and expression where others wish to silence, intimidate, and hinder it.
