Three of the foremost virtuosos of the banjo, representing bluegrass, old time and Irish influences respectively, treat us to an evening of masterful picking: a frolicking musical round robin, with each artist also presenting a solo segment. An impromptu acoustic jam may occur after the show so bring instruments! Tony Trischka, United States Artists Friends Fellow-2012, is considered to be the consummate banjo artist and perhaps the most influential banjo player in the roots music world. For more than 45 years, his stylings have inspired a whole generation of bluegrass and acoustic musicians with the many voices he has brought to the instrument. Rooted in the traditions of old time American folk music, Baltimore based banjo wizard Brad Kolodner represents the next generation of musicians pushing the boundaries into uncharted territory. Old time clawhammer banjo is experiencing a rebirth and Kolodner is helping to lead the charge as a performer, teacher, Strathmore Artist in Resident, DJ for WAMU’s Bluegrass Country, jam leader, community builder and ambassador for old time folk music. Keith Carr plays the Irish tenor (4-string) banjo, and is also well known as a player of the 10-string Irish bouzouki (aka cittern). He is a prominent performer in the Irish music scene in Washington, and he appears and records regularly with the highly regarded duo “Lilt. Carr teaches Irish traditional styles on various instruments; he is on the faculty of the Washington Conservatory of Music, where he gives group classes. — with Keith Carr and Brad Kolodner
