It appears one of historys biggest mysteries may have been solved. For the first time ever, debris found in 1991 on Nikumaroro, an uninhabited atoll in the southwestern Pacific republic of Kiribati, has been identified to a high degree of certainty as belonging to famed aviator Amelia Earhart’s twin-engined Lockheed Electra. Earhart famously disappeared in 1937 in a record attempt to fly around the world at the equator. One of the most interesting conclusions of the investigation is the belief that Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan did not crash into the ocean; rather, they likely made a forced landing on Nikumaroro smooth, flat coral reef and the two became castaways and eventually died on the atoll. news.discovery/history/us-history/aluminum-fragment-appears-to-belong-to-earharts-plane-141028.htm
